Abstract:  The Eschatological-Apocalyptical Face of Christ in the Eastern Christian Tradition. This paper develops reflections of the author on the mystery of the historical and glorified Holy Face of Jesus Christ in the Orthodox Church and tries to solve the apparent contradiction between the late appearance and cult of the human face of Jesus in icons connected with the discovery of the Mandylion or the Holy Shroud of Edessa (6th century), and the mystical and liturgical experienced of the eschatological face of the risen Christ recorded by Paul and the book of the Revelation. The same connection between liturgy and eschatology can be clearly noticed in the eschatological themes of the Byzantine art (the Deisis theme) and, most of all, of the Russian iconostasis (15th century) or the Moldavian "circular iconostasis" of the monasteries with exterior painting (16th century). There are two types of images of Christ, historical and glorified (before Incarnation and after Ascension), and, therefore, two distinct theological foundations of the icons: Incarnation and Eschatology (and Sophiology).
